The Quebrada Vítor Collection of the Natural History Museum of Valparaíso informs
on funerary and technological practices of the pre-Hispanic coastal societies of the Atacama
Desert, between c. 900 and 1500 ad. Despite the lack of stratigraphic context, the objects can
be analysed through a comparative and relational approach, based on a notion of archaeological
context that transcends the strictly positional and incorporates the network of significant
relationships between the artefacts, their functions and the spaces of interaction. The collection contains fishing lines, hooks, harpoons, sinkers and cephalopod hooks (fishing jigger), which
indicate an advanced knowledge of marine fishing, hunting and gathering. It also contains
prestige objects, such as tupus and tumis, as well as tools and materials for textile production.

La Colección Quebrada Vítor del Museo de Historia Natural de Valparaíso informa
sobre prácticas funerarias y tecnológicas de las sociedades costeras prehispánicas del desierto
de Atacama, entre c. 900 y 1500 d. C. A pesar de carecer de contexto estratigráfico, los objetos
pueden ser analizados mediante un enfoque comparativo y relacional, a partir de una noción de
contexto arqueológico que trasciende lo estrictamente posicional e incorpora la red de relaciones
significativas entre los artefactos, sus funciones y los espacios de interacción. La colección
contiene sedales, anzuelos, arpones, plomadas y poteras, que indican un dominio avanzado de
la pesca, caza y recolección marina. Además, contiene objetos de prestigio, como tupus y tumis,
e instrumentos y materiales de producción textil.
