Chilean Graphic Art Goes Modern: Posters by the Larrea Office, the González-Quiroz Duo and Daniel Gleiser in the National Library of Chile

The article reviews a corpus of 207 posters belonging to the Archive of Drawings and Prints of the National Library of Chile, representative of Chilean graphic art from the 1960s and early 1970s. Echoing the profound tensions and transformations that Chilean society was experiencing in those years, young designers such as Vicente and Antonio Larrea, Waldo González, Mario Quiroz and Daniel Gleiser developed avant-garde and experimental work, in which diverse styles, movements and international schools converged: from Bauhaus, HfG Ulm and the International Typographic Style to pop art, psychedelia and Chilean engraving. As well as situating the works in their context, this work analyses how these influences, which were fundamental to the modernisation of local graphics, are manifested in them.

El artículo revisa un corpus de 207 afiches pertenecientes al Archivo de Láminas y Estampas de la Biblioteca Nacional, representativos de la gráfica chilena de los años 60 y principios de los 70. Haciendo eco de las profundas tensiones y transformaciones que experimentaba la sociedad chilena por esos años, jóvenes diseñadores como Vicente y Antonio Larrea, Waldo González, Mario Quiroz y Daniel Gleiser desarrollaron un trabajo vanguardista y experimental, en el que confluyeron diversos estilos, movimientos y escuelas internacionales: desde la Bauhaus, la HfG Ulm y el Estilo Tipográfico Internacional hasta el pop art, la psicodelia y el grabado nacional. Junto con situar las obras en su contexto, este trabajo analiza cómo se manifiestan en ellas dichas influencias, fundamentales para la modernización de la gráfica local.
