Riverside carpentry in the Aysén Region through the collections of its regional museum

This paper deals with 16 shipwright tools belonging to the Regional Museum of Aysén, some acquired from private individuals during the early years of the institution and others from the former Museum of Patagonia. Simple, practical and mobile, these tools were indispensable for the inhabitants of the southern regions of Chile, allowing them to work, mould and transform wood in order to build boats, buildings and interior furnishings. The text describes the pieces and characterises their use, with data that shed light on the oldest type of tools used for boat building.

El presente trabajo aborda 16 herramientas de carpintería de ribera pertenecientes al Museo Regional de Aysén, algunas adquiridas a privados durante los primeros años de la institución y otras procedentes del antiguo Museo de la Patagonia. Sencillos, prácticos y móviles, estos utensilios fueron indispensables para los pobladores de las regiones australes de Chile, pues les permitieron trabajar, moldear y transformar la madera para construir tanto embarcaciones como edificios y mobiliario interior. El texto describe las piezas y caracteriza su uso, con datos que dan luces del tipo más antiguo de herramientas usado para la construcción de embarcaciones.
