The female author/illustrator of the 1940s and 1950s: an exploratory study of the artists Elena Poirier, Hedi Krasa and Yolanda Huneeus

This article deals with authorship in illustration between the 1940s and 1950s through
the cases of Elena Poirier, Hedi Krasa and Yolanda “Yola” Huneeus. With a feminist genealogy
perspective, the text opens up interpretative lines about the sexist mechanisms that have
historically prevented female illustrators from exercising their profession, describing how the
aforementioned authors managed to overcome them. Along with characterising the stylistic
features of the illustrations they produced for the Rapa Nui publishing house, now in the Archive
of Drawings and Prints of the National Library of Chile, it also details aspects of their biographies
linked to their entry into the working field, their permanence in the profession, their inclusion
in illustration collectives and the public to whom their drawings were addressed.

El siguiente artículo aborda la autoría en la ilustración entre los años 40 y 50 a partir de
los casos de Elena Poirier, Hedi Krasa y Yolanda «Yola» Huneeus. Con una perspectiva genealógica
feminista, el texto abre líneas interpretativas acerca de mecanismos sexistas que históricamente
han impedido a las ilustradoras ejercer su oficio, describiendo cómo las mencionadas autoras logra-
ron vencerlos. Junto con caracterizar sus rasgos estilísticos en las ilustraciones que realizaron para
la editorial Rapa Nui, hoy en el Archivo de Láminas y Estampas de la Biblioteca Nacional de Chile,
se detallan aspectos de sus biografías ligados a su entrada al campo laboral, a su permanencia
en el oficio, a su inclusión en colectivos de ilustradores y al público al que dirigieron sus dibujos.
