This paper investigates the extent of the smallpox epidemic at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in the provinces of Malleco and Cautín, located in the former Frontera or Araucanía. It addresses the development and impact of the disease—vectorised in the territory by the military occupation—as well as the measures adopted by the State to control it, based on the information contained in the books kept by the Araucanía Regional Archive and other official sources.

Este trabajo indaga los alcances de la epidemia de viruela a fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX en las provincias de Malleco y Cautín, ubicadas en la antigua Frontera o Araucanía. Se abordan el desarrollo e impacto de la enfermedad –vectorizada en el territorio por la ocupación militar–, así como las medidas adoptadas por el Estado para controlarla, a partir de la información contenida en los libros de Intendencia conservados por el Archivo Regional de la Araucanía y en otras fuentes oficiales.
